This was a fun track to write. Hayden gave me a picture to write about and I had some fun coming up with ideas. The song just developed around the idea that this guy was sitting at a train station, waiting for his lady to arrive on the train. He has so many expectations and has built it all up in his mind, but when she arrives, the truth is that she isn't really interested. A little sad when you think about it, but it made for a fun and interesting song.
lyrics
WATCHING THE WORLD GO BY
Sitting here watching the train pull into view
How is it gonna be when I see you
It’s been a while since you left me here
And I’ve been stuck in this moment playing it over in my head
I hear every word just like it’s happening for real
In my mind I touch and you feel just like I feel but
I’m watching the world go by
Seeing it through my eyes
I see you there and
I’m telling myself these lies
Just couldn’t say goodbye
Cause I don’t understand why I can’t be your man
Was it me, was it something that I did
Was I not the man you needed me to be
You know I’ve changed, I’ve had plenty of time to see
That I can be the one, be the one you need
I’m watching the world go by
Seeing it through my eyes
I see you there and
I’m telling myself these lies
Just couldn’t say goodbye
Cause I don’t understand why I can’t be your man
The train pulls in, you walk to me
Your eyes turn to the sky
As you reach out and touch my shoulder
Gentle whisper of good bye
And I’m left standing here in wonder
As I watch you walk away
Your taking more than just my gaze
And you’re leaving me this pain
I’m watching the world go by
Seeing it through my eyes
I see you there and
I’m telling myself these lies
Just couldn’t say goodbye
Cause I don’t understand why I can’t be your man
